Touch the Rock
Every beachgoing painter in Oregon is sure to paint Haystack Rock. Every Cannon Beach gallery holds dozens of representations of this majestic, wind-shadowed, wave-scored haunt of seabirds and sun rays. A person yearning to draw or paint this rock, or its neighbors, might say, "Why bother? It's overdone." That person might be me.
It's worth doing. Even if it's been done bumptillion times, as long as it captures my interest.
In the same way, don't let fear of what's overdone stop you from writing what you want. Some things call you, despite the fact others have covered these topics and stories and ideas to saturation. You have permission. See the scene your way, take your own chance, touch the rock.
