I Submit To You

As a kid how I loved Star Trek. There was something about the language that resonated with me, even when I didn't know what the words meant. Kirk had such a way about him. Seems he said "I submit" a lot, snapping off the syllables in that way he had, jaunty and Captain-like, wise and shrewd.

Gentle words, really, but delivered with defiance and confidence. And so I repeat with Kirk, while mailing off manuscript submissions, "I submit . . . to you! I submit . . . to you!" with the inner grin that says, "No, I'm really not submitting to anyone at all."
